Jazz, Barthelme, and Bookworm

Listening to some old Bookworms, came upon this one, with George Saunders.

Toward the end of the interview, talking about creating and exploiting expectation and "incremental repetition" in writing stories, Saunders mentions Barthelme. Michael Silverblatt responds: "The pattern is based on jazz. That you're playing the melody and now we're going to have a whole series of variations, wilder and wilder, in which the melody is going to be more and more surprising, become more and more personal to the musician, and, you know, reemerge in a new and completely surprising form."

"And never be forgotten by the listener," sez George.

Exactly.
